12V Conversion info

12V conversion: Which one is right for you?

There are various options available when converting to 12V. These differ in the type of conversion and ultimately also in the price. The main question here should be what purpose the conversion should serve.

KEDO Plug-in regulator, item # 50544:

An uncomplicated 'plug-and-play' conversion that requires no in-depth technical knowledge. Here, the standard regulator and rectifier are replaced with the KEDO Plug-in regulator. Furthermore, all lamps, battery, horn and the flasher relay must be replaced with 12V versions. For a better light output of the headlight, the original headlight insert with BA20D bulb can be swapped for a modern headlight, H4 bulb. The classic look is retained thanks to the original embossed headlight glass. Headlight and taillight will continue to be operated by AC voltage, which is no problem as long as no LED bulbs are to be used. The ignition system is not changed by the conversion, the original contact ignition remains. Important: the output of the alternator does not change! The electrical resistance (in cables and especially the contact points) has less effect at 12V than at 6V. We recommend using an AGM-type battery (Motobatt for example)

PME conversion kit, item # 50555

A simultaneous conversion to 12V and CDI ignition, i.e. omitting the points/contact ignition. Output power of the alternator: approx. 90W. Simple installation, but again no significant increase in alternator output. The original pole wheel remains. It must be dismantled and the original alternator base plate replaced. For the one-time adjustment of the ignition, a static ignition timing light is required for the early ignition adjustment. After install, there will be no need to adjust the ignition. The CDI ignition provides a more powerful spark and an improved ignition curve compared to the original contact ignition. Headlight and taillight are still operated with AC voltage, which is no problem so long as no LED bulbs are to be used. If the LED headlight item # 50768/50768C is to be used with this solution, the DC lighting coil, item # 41078 is also required.

Powerdynamo conversion kit, item # 31348

A simultaneous conversion to 12V and CDI ignition, also omitting the points/contact ignition. Here, a completely new alternator/stator incl. new magneto is installed, the installation effort is correspondingly greater (detailed instructions are included), but not overly complicated. Disadvantage: most expensive conversion option. Advantage: 180W output power, i.e. commercially available 60/55W halogen lamps can be used for the main headlight, yet there is still enough power left over for navigation devices, heated grips and other devices. We offer a suitable supplementary kit to install the CDI, ignition coil and regulator with item # 31259. The most sensible conversion for the reasonably skilled mechanic, provided a brighter headlight and solid output power of the alternator is required. All electrical drawing components including headlights and taillights are operated with DC voltage, the use of LED components would be absolutely possible (and allow more wattage to be dispersed)
